Nothing decides how a passage feels — or how safe it is — like the watch schedule. Get it right and the boat is never unwatched, everyone sleeps enough to think, and the 0300 horizon check happens because the system says so, not because someone remembered. Get it wrong and by day four the whole crew is stupid with fatigue. Here are the systems that actually survive contact with the ocean.
Why a schedule beats good intentions
Offshore, someone must be responsible for the boat every minute — not “around,” not “listening for the AIS,” but on watch: scanning the horizon, watching the sail plan, owning the decisions. A schedule turns that from a virtue into a structure. It also protects the thing fatigue attacks first — judgment. Most bad calls at sea are made by tired people who would never have made them rested. The schedule is how the boat guarantees nobody is that tired.
The systems, by crew size
Double-handed — 3 on, 3 off. The cruising standard. Three hours is long enough for the off-watch to reach real sleep and short enough for the on-watch to stay sharp. The cost: nobody gets more than ~2.5 hours of unbroken sleep for the whole passage, which is why many couples stretch to 4/4 in settled weather and drop back to 3/3 when it pipes up.
Double-handed alternative — 6 on, 6 off (daylight) with 3/3 nights. Long day watches buy the off-watch a real block of rest and the chance to actually do something — cook, fix, navigate — while short night watches keep the dark hours humane.
Three or more crew — 4 on, 8 off. The classic three-watch rotation. Eight hours off is transformative: people read books, bake bread, arrive rested. If you can sail with three competent watchkeepers, do.
The Swedish system. Variable-length watches — short at night, long in the day — arranged so the rotation drifts and nobody owns the 0200–0500 graveyard every night. Slightly harder to memorise, much easier to live with for weeks. Print the rota and tape it over the chart table.
The solo watch: 20-minute discipline
A solo sailor cannot stand a watch — so the watch becomes a cycle. Set a timer for 20 to 40 minutes: scan the horizon, check AIS and radar, check the course and the sails, sleep. Repeat, around the clock, for as long as the passage lasts. The number comes from closing-speed math — a ship below the horizon can be on top of you in roughly 20 minutes. AIS guard alarms and radar zones extend your senses, but the timer is the system, and keeping the discipline when you are exhausted is the hard, non-negotiable part of sailing alone.
Keeping the night watch honest
Night watches fail quietly: eyes drop to the phone, the horizon scan stretches from every ten minutes to every thirty, and the harness stays clipped to the pushpit instead of the jackline. The counters are simple. Protect your night vision (red light only below, dim the plotter). Move — stand, scan the full horizon slowly, then instruments, then sails. Eat something small every hour. Clip on before you are tired enough to forget. And log something every hour: position, course, wind, anything odd. The hourly entry is not bureaucracy — it is a pulse check that proves the watch actually happened, and the record that makes the logbook worth keeping.
The watch change is half the system
Every handover, out loud and in the log: position, course and speed, traffic, weather trend, sail plan, and the thing you have been quietly watching for the last hour. A watch schedule with sloppy handovers is just people taking turns being alone. Put the schedule in the passage plan before you leave, and let the log enforce it once you are out there.
